Character
Counts
New Center's
discipline policy is based in most part on a program called Character Counts.
This program actually has the students learning lessons about Trustworthiness,
Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring, and Citizenship. There
will be daily and weekly lessons covering the "Six Pillars of Character"
which were previously named. If a child breaks or does not follow
these pillars, the consequence will be to fill out a discipline sheet which
details the inappropriate behavior and the punishment for that behavior.
A copy of this paper will be sent home for the parent to review, sign,
and return to school. The following are the Six Pillars of Character
in more detail. in essence, these pillars are our classroom and school
rules.
Trustworthiness
Be honest
- Tell the truth and nothing but the truth
Respect
Treat others
the way you want to be treated - Use good manners - Deal peacefully with
anger, insults and disagreements
Responsibility
Be accountable
for your choices - Think before you act and consider the consequences
Fairness
Play by the
rules - Take turns and share - Be open minded and listen to others
Caring
Be kind -
Be compassionate and show you care
Citizenship
Do your share
to make your school and community better - Obey laws and rules - Protect
the environment
The Six Pillars
of Character will seem like a lot in the beginning. The children
will learn these character traits by example and daily/weekly lessons in
the classroom. I will do my best to point out the six pillars as
I see the children perform them each day. As the children live these
guidelines each day, they will become second nature to them. There
will be times in which students will misbehave. I will try my best
to remind the students of the right thing to do and direct them to the
proper action. If this behavior continues, the parent will
be notified and further action will be discussed.
